Calzones

I created this recipe for pizza night at our house.  Sometimes we are craving something other than a plain pizza.  On a night like that, I make Calzones.  The best part about these is that we can have them made with the toppings we love.  No more fighting over what toppings we want on a pizza!  The picture shows a Supreme Calzone but you have the freedom to choose any toppings you want to put in it!

Calzone
Yields 6
These are delicious and so much fun to make! They meet the taste of each individual by allowing everyone to have his or her favorite ingredients.

For the dough
  1. 4 cups bread flour
  2. 1 T active dry yeast
  3. 2 tsp salt
  4. 1 tsp sugar
  5. garlic salt, to taste (just my own personal touch! I think it makes the dough taste good!)
  6. 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  7. 1 1/2 cups warm water
For the filling
  1. Choose any of your favorite pizza ingredients. (My particular favorite is a Supreme Calzone but you can choose whatever you like)
For the top of Calzone
  1. 4 Tablespoons butter, melted
  2. 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  3. 1 Tablespoon of parmesan cheese
  4. Oregano, sprinkle to taste
Instructions
  1. 1. In a large bowl mix together flour, yeast, sugar, and the salts. Then add oil and water. Mix until flour is combined. Knead dough until it forms a soft ball and is smooth and slightly elastic.
  2. 2. Let dough rise in a warm place for 45 minutes or until almost double is size.
  3. 3. Divide dough into 6 balls. With a slightly floured rolling pin, roll out dough to about the thickness of a thin crust pizza. Place your favorite ingredients to within 1/2 inch to edge on one half of the dough. Fold empty half of dough over the toppings to meet the other side. Press edges together. You can now flute the edges like you would a pie or leave them flat. That is totally up to you.
  4. 4. Place the Calzones on a greased baking sheet.
  5. 5. Mix the melted butter, garlic powder and parmesan cheese in a small bowl. Brush over the top of each Calzone. Sprinkle with desired amount of Oregano for that yummy pizza flavor.
  6. 6. Bake in a 425 degree oven for 18-20 minutes or until slightly golden brown.
  7. 7. Serve with your favorite pizza sauce.
  8. Enjoy!
